Australian salmon company Huon Aquaculture said it produced the biggest salmon smolts grown on-land in the southern hemisphere at its Whale Point center.

The smolt grown at the site reached 1 kilogram before sea transfer, which will help the company reduce production time at sea by between 30 and 40 percent.

“The ability to grow larger salmon on land will cut down the time fish are at sea from an average of 14 months to as little as 9 to 10 months," said Philip Wiese, Huon Aquaculture Deputy CEO.
