The reason why Mowi, the world's largest salmon farmer, lost 1.5 salmon fry at its hatchery in Sandora near Skjervoy, Norway last month is complex, Group Communications Manager Eivind Naevdal-Bolstad told IntraFish.

The mortality was mainly due to gill damage caused by the collection of organic biological material between the drain and the mechanical filter, Naevdal-Bolstad said.

The company attempted to remove the material before the incident, however, it was not enough to prevent the undesirable water quality.
