Netherlands-based breeding company Hendrix Genetix and US startup GenetiRate are researching a new technology to measure the feed conversion rate of trout based on metabolic rates of fish larvae or muscle tissue.

GenetiRate previously tested the technology on other aquaculture species. If the project succeeds, the Dutch breeding company will be able to pick out individual trout with better metabolic rates, which predicts better feed conversion.

The project is set to kick off by the end of 2020.
