Norway-based Genomar plans to use a new tilapia genetics center in the Brazilian state of Tocantins as a springboard into the Colombian and Mexican markets.

GenoMar Genetics Group CEO Alejandro Tola Alvarez said the site is scheduled to open in early 2021, under a year after construction kicked off in June.

"It's natural that we build our benchmark center for genetic improvement in Brazil and, of course, the Brazilian industry, but also from there to also serve the Latin American industry as we make inroads into expanding into other countries, Colombia and Mexico," Alvarez told IntraFish.
