Farmed salmon giant Cermaq last week transferred its first smolt to iFarm pens -- a project that if successful could improve fish welfare, performance and overall farming practices, the company said.

iFarm is based on image recognition, identification of each individual salmon and individual follow-up of each fish. For example, a fish with sea lice could be sorted aside for treatment.

The method saves costs and the need to handle the fish is significantly reduced, thus improving fish health and welfare.
