A partnership between the Ministry of Fisheries and the Pacific Community (SPC) has restarted freshwater shrimp breeding and rearing at the Galoa Brackishwater Aquaculture Centre in Fiji, reports the Fiji Times.

Shalendra Singh, the country's principal fisheries officer, aquaculture, said the hatchery team conducts several shrimp breeding cycles in a year to supply baby shrimp to farmers.

The shrimp is an indigenous species known as the Monkey River prawn (Macrobrachium lar), known locally as 'ura dina.'
