New Zealand-based greenshell mussel research company Shellfish Production & Technology (SPATnz) has demostrated that hatchery-raised mussels can grow to twice as fast as those caught from the wild, which could contribute NZD 200 million (€115 million/$127 million) a year to the country's economy.

SPATnz greenshell mussels took about 16.7 months to grow from seed to harvest size, versus the 28.3 months for the average of the wild caught varieties.
