Ghana-based tilapia operation Tropo Farms is in the middle of raising significant capital and is looking to triple its production within the next five years, the company’s Founder and Director Mark Amechi told IntraFish.

The company, which operates on the 8,500-square kilometer Volta Lake in Ghana, was started in 2000 and operations currently include two separate hatchery/nursing sites -- with breeding ponds, maturation ponds, fry production ponds, hatcheries, incubation ponds – and two grow-out sites.

Both hatcheries combined produce around four million fry per week, and from the grow-out sites the company plans to harvest between 10,000 and 11,000 metric tons in 2018, but anticipates ramping up production to 30,000 metric tons in the next four to five years, said Amechi.
