A team of US researchers published results last week of a study that examined vannamei shrimp and how it fights against the acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND) strain of vibrio parahaemolyticus.

Charoen Pokphand Foods Plc (CPF) funded the study, which was led by scientists from the University of Rhode Island and the Harvard Medical School.

A specific strain was isolated from vannamei shrimp and researchers determined it had antibacterial activity against AHPND, previously known as Early Syndrome Mortality (EMS).

Last month, Peru’s Ministry of Production blocked imports of live tiger shrimp and vannamei from countries where AHPND was identified.
