Cooke Aquaculture is vowing to fight efforts by Washington state to legislate it out of business.

On Thursday, the Washington state Senate voted 35-12 to effectively end Atlantic salmon farming in the state by not renewing Cooke's leases on cage sites as they expire over the next six years.

Cooke is the only company farming salmon in Washington waters.

The bill passed despite efforts by the company to support an amendment proposed by one senator that would have allowed Atlantic salmon aquaculture to continue using only female fish," according to a CBC report.
