Canada's Cooke Inc. announced Thursday the establishment of Northeast Nutrition Scotland Limited after the acquisition of the former Skretting fish feed mill in Invergordon.

The mill had previously produced fish feed for aquaculture companies in Scotland. Northeast Nutrition Scotland Limited will manufacture fish feed for Cooke Aquaculture Scotland Limited, a salmon producer with facilities in the Shetland and Orkney Islands, as well as the United Kingdom’s mainland.

“We are excited to include domestic feed manufacturing in Scotland, adding to the vertical integration of our operations and further enhancing the full traceability of our fish," said Glenn Cooke, CEO of Cooke.

Skretting announced in November its plans to cease manufacturing activities in the United Kingdom, and it closed the Invergordon facility in April 2019.

Cooke plans to work with former employees who were affected by the closure to resume operations at the mill.

At the time of the closure, Skretting said the plant was closing because an oversupply in the salmon feed market.

Mowi's plans to open a new facility in early 2019 to supply its farms and other farmers was a factor behind Skretting's decision to close the plant.

Skretting produced 100,000 metric tons of feed in the United Kingdom in 2017, mostly Atlantic salmon and trout feed.
