Chilean salmon farmer Nova Austral has been fined CLP 1.23 billion (€1.3 million/$1.6 million) by the Chilean Environment Minsistry (SMA) for misreporting fish mortality rates between 2016-2018, La Tercera reported.

The company, operating in Chile's southern Magallanes region, was also accused of failing to properly manage mortalities and solid waste, as well as failing to comply with preventative measures and a contingency plan.

Investigators spotted a discrepancy of around 20,000 kilograms of fish in company data that the company failed to properly declare from the Aracena 19 production site.
