The escape of 930,000 salmon from a Marine Harvest site in Chile could cost the company $7 million (€6 million), and is 10 times over the company’s total escapes in 2017, reports Diario Financiero.

It is the first salmon escape reported to the National Service of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Sernapesca) this year.

In 2017, the entire Chilean salmon industry reported escapes of 165,000 salmon.

The value of $7 million (€6 million) was calculated on biomass and costs, but according to experts the figure could double when taking into account the income that the sale of those salmon would have generated after harvesting.
