Chile’s Secretariat of Fisheries and Aquaculture Subpesca said it will simplify and speed up procedures for fish farmers to obtain production licenses.

The initiative is aimed at eliminating duplication and smoothing the path companies take when wishing to increase production.

This may be achieved by farmers signalling changes to their aquaculture production plan registered officially as a "technical project."

Producers and the introduction of new species will require only the approval of Subpesca, and no longer the Undersecretariat for the Armed Forces, something which dates back to Chile's military dictatorship between 1973 and 1990.
