An appeals court in Puerto Montt, Chile, has confirmed a $32,900 fine handed down to salmon producer Invermar for misreporting sea lice levels at one of its production sites.

Correct levels of sea lice, the scourge of the salmon industry, must be reported to authorities under law in the South American nation.

Alicia Gallardo, director of National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service Sernapesca, said the judgement highlights the importance of providing accurate information to Sernapesca to allow it to implement control measures that guarantee the sustainability of aquaculture in Chile.
