The Chilean government's agency for emergencies (Onemi) -- part of the Ministry of the Interior and Public Safety -- activated a “yellow alert” following "abnormal activity” of the Villarrica volcano in Los Rios region.

Following the alert, Chile’s National Service of Fisheries and Aquaculture (Sernapesca) put a contingency plan in place in collaboration with all aquaculture companies operating in the area. According to Sernapesca, there are 25 hatcheries in the volcano risk zone.

As part of the plan, companies are evaluating the possible transfer of smolts to other sites outside the danger zone.
