Three of Cermaq Canada's salmon farms on the west coast of Vancouver Island are suffering from mortalities due to a widespread algal bloom in the area.

The farms are located in Binns Island, Bawden Point and Ross Pass and are all taking measures to reduce risks to the fish.

"Blooms are often associated with low dissolved oxygen events and warm ocean water temperatures and weather changes – all of which we are, or have been experiencing," Cermaq Canada Managing Director David Kiemele said.
