Canadian Celebrity Chef Michael Smith threw his support behind genetically modified (GM) foods during the first of five public hearings on Canada's food policies being held across the country.

The sessions focus on food affordability, accessibility, safety and conservation, according to a CBC report.

"This debate over whether GMO is something that we should or shouldn't do is frankly disingenuous, first world problems," said Smith, who was invited to speak at the event as PEI's food ambassador. "We need to be able to feed 10 billion people on this planet by 2050.
