After the environmental group Coalition for the Protection of P.E.I. Water raised concerns over a faulty environmental assessment process of genetically modified (GM) salmon to be grown in Prince Edward Island (PEI), the federal government is stepping up.

The Canadian federal government said there will be an environmental assessment of a proposal to produce GM salmon for human consumption in PEI.

Recently, the US Senate Appropriations Committee unanimously approved a bill that would renew a ban on GM salmon imports

The bill now faces a full Senate vote.
