Brazilian tilapia producer GeneSeas is pulling forward plans to increase tilapia production to 25,000 metric tons a year in 2019.

A more than BRL 40 million (€9.2 million/$10.7 million) investment under the second phase of the company's expansion strategy will now go ahead earlier than planned.

The company says it is responding to strong domestic demand.

São Paulo-based GeneSeas was planning to raise production to 20,000 metric tons by 2020.

The company produced 14,000 metric tons of tilapia in 2017 at production sites bordering São Paulo and Mato Grosso states.
