The Brazilian aquaculture industry could grow by 7-10 percent per year just by the government speeding up the process of approving licences for producers, trade body Peixe BR said.

There are more than 2,000 licence applications outstanding across Brazil, a figure that in theory if all were granted could boost annual production to 3 million metric tons, Peixe BR CEO Francisco Medeiros calculates.

Seventy percent of license applications are for tilapia projects.

"I don't think we have the structure to reach 3 million but I certainly believe we could reach in terms of 7-10 percent growth a year in the first five years," Medeiros told IntraFish.
