Brazil's leading tilapia producing state, Parana, is expected to increase production by 20 percent a year over the next five years following the announcement of a planned rule change allowing larger farming sites.

Until now, producers have been unable to farm on sites covering more than 15 hectares, but that appears set to change after an announcement by Parana state governor Carlos Massa Ratinho Junior.

"Parana is Brazil's biggest fish producer but more than 80 percent of producers use less than 15 hectares," Francisco Medeiros, CEO at Brazilian aquaculture trade body Peixe BR, told IntraFish.
