Brazil's aquaculture industry has come out fighting against claims farmed fish causes fatal Haff syndrome -- also called black urine disease -- in humans.

Cases of Haff syndrome have been recently reported in four states in northern Brazil: Amazonas, Ceara, Para and Bahia.

The death of a 51 year-old woman from the disease was reported in the Amazonian city of Itacoatiara.

Haff syndrome causes rhabdomyolysis, the swelling and breakdown of skeletal muscle.
