Chile's Environment Superintendency (SMA) has ordered salmon producer Blumar to implement stronger measures to protect the marine ecosystem surrounding its production site in southern Chile where 18 cages sank on June 27.

It is estimated that 771,405 fish died when the cages sank after stormy weather battered the site. Nearly 104,000 salmon escaped.

Blumar will now have to carry out daily monitoring of PH, temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and oxygen saturation, among other actions at the Caicura site in the Los Lagos region.
