France-based rainbow trout producer Aquadis Naturellement is using a new feed from Biomar that contains insect meal and features a range of natural ingredients both companies hope will make the trout more attractive to health-conscious consumers.

The first feed in BioMar's Salvea brand feed portfolio is targeted at rainbow trout farmers in the French and Spanish market. The feed features naturally derived pigments, added natural antioxidants and ingredients that resemble natural prey for fish, such as insect meal. It also includes an increased level of omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, BioMar said. Together with the inclusion the insect meal, which replaces a portion of fishmeal, Salvea feed also uses fish trimmings meal.

The result, says the company, is a fish-in-fish-out (FIFO) ratio as low as 0.3, making it very sustainable.

“Today’s seafood consumers are not only interested in what’s on their plate, they also want to know where it comes from, how it is made and what is in it.” said Ole Christensen, vice president of the Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) Division at BioMar Group.

“This development increases our responsibility as fish farmers for providing wholesome seafood which also respects nature and its resources,” said Jean-Pol Le Ribault, CEO of French trout producer Aquadis Naturellement.
