Faroese salmon farmer Bakkafrost is investing DKK 1.13 billion (€151.9 million/$162.9 million) through 2020 in its smolt production to reach its long-term goal of boosting the smolt size of its fish to up to 500 grams each.

The investments are part of the company's strategy to deal with the increasing risk of sea lice, CEO Regin Jacobsen told the audience at the IntraFish Seafood Investor Forum in London last week.

Having fish in the sea for 18 months or longer is a "big risk" to contract sea lice, and Bakkafrost may have found a way to deal with it, Jacobsen said.
