Land-based salmon farmer Atlantic Sapphire told investors Thursday it is in the early stages of researching the feasibility of raising steelhead trout at its Denmark pilot facility.

If the tests are positive, the company could add trout production to its operations at its Miami Bluehouse facility, it said in an update.

Company CEO Johan Andreassen touted trout's faster growth rate as one reason for the company's interest in the species. He noted trout can grow in 12-13 months as opposed to 18-20 months for Atlantic salmon.
