The shrimp sector needs "to shift toward more sustainability," Koji Yamamoto, general manager Japan at Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) said at the recent EuroShrimp 2017 event in Bremen, Germany.

Currently, 80 farms are certified in Asia and Latin America, he said, with volumes amounting to 125,451 metric tons.

Vietnam is leading the field, followed by Ecuador, India, Honduras and Belize.

Another 35 farms are currently under assessment.

However, this is equivalent to only 2 to 3 percent of global shrimp production, Yamamoto said.
