Some 40,000 juvenile totoaba (Totoaba macdonaldi) were released in the Sea of Cortez in Mexico Thursday, with the goal of re-populating a species close to extinction from overfishing.

Totoaba is one of the fastest growing fish in the world, but is intensively fished for its swim bladder, which is a delicacy in Asia.

Since 2015, Earth Ocean Farms has worked with the Mexican Department of Fishing (Conapesca) and the Ministry of the Environment (Semarnat) to save this endemic species.

This is the fourth time that totoaba have been repopulated in the waters of Bahía Concepción.
