The Northwest Aquaculture Alliance (NWAA), whose members include Canadian seafood giant Cooke as well as Cargill and Pacific Seafood, is not taking lightly the news that Cooke may soon have to completely shut down its netpen farming operations in Washington state.

"NWAA plans to fight like hell to keep marine aquaculture in Washington," NWAA Executive Director Jeanne McKnight told IntraFish, following news that the Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) plans not to renew licenses for the company's remaining steelhead farms.
