AquaBounty CEO Ron Stotish said the company’s acquisition of Bell Aquaculture’s recirculating aquaculture system (RAS) facility in Indiana is a critical step in creating a money-making operation after years of research and development.

“We have plenty of broodstock, plenty of capacity, so what we needed was production facilities,” Stotish told IntraFish. “What we’re hoping is that once we demonstrate the economics and the quality of the product that we’ll have opportunities to expand production.”

AquaBounty expects its first salmon from the operation to be harvested in 2019, though that depends on a number of factors.
