American Aquafarms had no plans to use genetically modified Atlantic salmon eggs at its fledgling closed-containment salmon farm slated to begin operations in Gouldsboro, Maine, next year, the company's founder told IntraFish on Friday.

Mikael Roenes, the founder of American Aquafarms and Norway-based Purecod, told IntraFish the plan was always to use non-genetically modified eggs from GM salmon producer AquaBounty for its 30,000 metric-ton closed-containment facility.

On April 19, Maine officials informed American Aquafarms that a lack of documentation pertaining to the strain of eggs to be used in the salmon farming project was the primary reason the state rejected the project, throwing the farm's future into limbo.
