Around 23,000 coho salmon escaped from Cermaq Chile's farm in Quemchi, according to the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Services (Sernapesca)'s count.

The company reported the escape on Dec. 30 from its production site in the Los Lagos region.

Cermaq Chile was able to recover 5,050 of the escaped fish following recapture procedures.

The escape was a result of a breakage in the cage nets that held the fish, the company confirmed.

The fish were of commercial size already.
