SalMar announced Monday that it will acquire and absorb the two salmon companies SalmoNor and Norway Royal Salmon (NRS), creating the world's second largest salmon producer by a large margin.

Mowi is still the largest, with Cermaq currently second, followed by Leroy Seafood Group, which was only narrowly larger than SalMar based on harvest volume in 2021.

The announcement of the mergers comes after a long and contentious power struggle over parent company NTS, which owns 100 percent of SalmoNor and 68 percent of the listed Norway Royal Salmon (NRS).
