Canadian Minister of Fisheries and Oceans Bernadette Jordan's December decision to phase out salmon farming in British Columbia's Discovery Islands "sends a signal that west Canada might not be the place to grow volumes," said Christian Nordby, an equity research analyst at Kepler Cheuvreux.
Salmon farming giants Mowi, Cermaq and Grieg Seafood raise salmon in the region but have now been ordered to shut down their sites in the area over the next 18 months, a dramatic hit to production and jobs in the sector.
