CLARE Island Seafarm Ltd, which operates offshore cages in exposed sites in the mouth of Clew Bay, Co Mayo, claims to have been the first in the world accredited in Germany as a fully organic or 'bio' producer of farmed salmon under EU Regulation 2092/91, reports TOM WRAY.
The company, which has a joint venture with Trouw Ireland, is growing increasing quantities of 'organic' salmon for which there is a good market in Germany.
It was founded in 1987 by Norwegian tobacco company Tiedemans, in conjunction with the local community development company, Cliara Development Company Ltd, which still has an 8% stake.
