The government said late Friday that it would immediately block imports from some of the biggest U.S. meat producers, including Tyson Foods, the world's biggest meat processor, and Cargill, the largest U.S. agricultural company. It also said that it would strengthen inspections of American meat to guard against health risks.
Frozen chicken meat from Tyson was found to contain salmonella, China's General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine said in a statement on its Web site.
It also halted shipments of frozen pork ribs from Cargill Meat Solutions, a unit of Cargill, for 45 days so that the company could "correct" the contamination, according to the statement.
