Faroe Islands' salmon group Bakkafrost's new biogas operation now supplies upwards of 2 percent of the total power to the island nation.

Bakkafrost invested around DKK 100 million ($15.6 million/€13.4 million) in the site, dubbed Forka, since it was constructed in 2019. The site was designed to convert sludge from hatcheries, fish waste and manure from nearby farms into gas and electricity.

The turbines produced electricity for the first time last year, and if they work as planned, Bakkafrost could reduce its annual greenhouse gas emissions by around 11,000 metric tons.
