Canada's Minister of Fisheries on Monday announced significant closures for the 2021 fishing season -- affecting nearly 60 percent of the country's commercial salmon fisheries -- in an effort to drastically consolidate the industry and reverse the reported decline of wild stocks.

The closures affecting commercial salmon fisheries and First Nations communal commercial fisheries are intended to reduce pressure on stocks and will be included in the 2021-22 Pacific Salmon Integrated Fisheries Management Plan.
