US shellfish harvesters Atlantic Capes Fisheries (ACF) and Northern Wind have taken a leading role in a Fishery Improvement Project (FIP) designed to improve the management of the Mexican Bay Scallop Fishery to align with the goals for sustainable use in international standards for fisheries.
“Northern Wind has been sourcing product from Mexico for more than 30 years. We are now happy to be co-sponsoring an FIP project with Atlanta Capes Fisheries and Don's Gulf Select," George Kouri, Co-CEO of Northern Wind, told IntraFish. "Our objective is to get this high quality Mexican Bay species listed as a sustainable fishery."
The Mexican Bay Scallop, also known as Argopecten ventricosus, is a wild scallop that is “diver-caught” in the fishing area of Magdalena Bay, Mexico.
The FIP, launched in November, will be assessed to the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) standard.
