California-based vegan seafood company Sophie's Kitchen is launching a new and improved canned plant-based "Toona."

Produced from a base of peas, the company said the new formula is 100 percent vegan and is replicates the taste, shredability, smell, and appearance of wild-caught tuna.

Sophie’s Kitchen initially launched canned vegan “toona" in 2010.

It is part of a range of plant-based seafood alternatives, including vegan smoked salmon, vegan crab cakes, vegan breaded shrimp, and vegan fish fillets.

The relaunch comes after the company listed vegan crab cakes and vegan breaded shrimp at 400 Walmart stores in a move billed as further proof that plant-based seafood can attract mainstream consumers.
