Norwegian salmon prices correct down but remain high

Although prices are correcting from last week’s explosive surge, they are still above NOK 70 per kilo on average.

Norwegian salmon prices for next week are expected to retreat between NOK 4 (€0.40/$0.45) and NOK 5 (€0.51/$0.57) per kilo, correcting down from the boom they experienced last Friday. Nevertheless, prices should remain largely above NOK 70 (€7.10/$8) per kilogram.

“The price just went too high last week,” one exporter told IntraFish.

In addition, the airline market, and especially China, has been slower, said one exporter.

"The prices the farmers got, and what the customers wanted to pay, didn't go up," he said.

One salmon buyer believes that expectations of higher uptake next week will help push prices down. "But we must remember that even if the price falls, this is still a high price level," he said.

Another exporter said the market has fallen through the week, and even more at the end. "It was too loud. Both industry and the aviation market slow down when prices crawl up to NOK 80 (€8.10/$9.10) per kg as they did last Friday, he said.

According to the exporter, residual fish must have been traded for NOK 68 (€6.90/$7.70) to NOK 69 (€7/$7.80) per kg in Oslo this week.

“Many have probably suffered great losses,” he said.
