Arturo Clement, president of Chilean salmon industry trade body SalmonChile, is taking on an additional role as president of the Chile-Russia Business Council.
In his new position, Clement will be in charge of developing private cooperation between the two countries, which in turn should contribute to increased business opportunities.
Chile’s “Binational Business Councils” were established to complement the work of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and grow the country’s position abroad.
The country’s Sociedad de Fomento Fabril (Sofofa) appointed executives from various prominent companies and industries to assume the positions of presidents and vice-presidents of the different binational councils.
The main purpose of the different councils is to disseminate and implement the benefits obtained in trade agreements signed by Chile, which are a fundamental tool for export growth.
Chilean salmon exports into Russia have been restricted for several months, following the detection of chemical residues and unauthorized substances in shipments to Russia, and as a result of the audit carried out by Russian authorities.
In March Sernapesca said it expected Russian restrictions to be lifted on all Chilean salmon suppliers eventually.
Alicia Gallardo, the head of Chile's National Fisheries and Aquaculture Service (Sernapesca), said she believes Russian authorities are open to lifting their remaining restrictions on imports of Chilean salmon, and hinted in June that the process is moving forward.
