Japanese shrimp consumption is on the decline following the end of  New Year celebrations and an increase in consumption tax, according to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).

The market has also been hit by the weather as a constant snowfall has forced consumers to stay at home.

Instead the Japanese are turning to eat more fish rather than shrimp and are switching to processed products.

Imports of shrimp into Japan were almost nil during week 10 and they are expected to continue like this until the end of March.
