The Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP) reacted to recent IntraFish reports on weight-tampered shrimp from Vietnam with an article published on its website.

Vietnamese brokers have allegedly been "hammering" agar -- a plant-based gelatin -- into black tiger shrimp to increase weight.

Sources told IntraFish in February this year it is "a huge problem in Vietnam right now," and while it was a latent issue in the past couple of years, cases have skyrocketed through December and January.

In reaction to the reports VASEP responded with the following article:

In recent time, IntraFish, an international website on seafood has published some articles about agar injection to shrimp by Vietnam packers to raise its weight.
