But she also said she has secured the support of Sens. Stevens and Inouye for an amendment she has introduced which would ensure that vessels supporting offshore aquaculture facilities are American-made and American-manned, in compliance with the Jones Act.

The original Administration bill would allow foreign-made vessels to support offshore aquaculture facilities.

“This bill, while not a final product, will go a long way toward establishing the ground rules for offshore aquaculture,” said Snowe in a press release. “As we move forward, we must make sure this emerging industry does not endanger wild caught fisheries, but supplements them to meet demand and provide predictability to the seafood industry.
