At the beginning of 2018 the mood in the global shrimp sector was bullish and upbeat.

At the National Fisheries Institute's (NFI) Global Seafood Market Conference (GSMC) in January the exuberance was on full display.

Global production was strong and disease issues were largely under control, attendees at the event were told. Some even went as far as saying the global shrimp market would be stable in 2018.

Well, that proved to be an overstatement. Robust production met up with flat demand, resulting in an oversupply situation that rattled the shrimp market for most of the year.
