A fire that tore through a Trident Seafoods processing vessel docked in Tacoma, Washington, Wednesday night has rendered the vessel a total loss, the company told IntraFish on Thursday morning.
“We are grateful to the Tacoma Fire Department for their swift response and watch on scene, and that no one was injured,” said Trident CEO Joe Bundrant. “We will conduct a full investigation of the cause.”
Firefighters battled the large blaze on the processing vessel Aleutian Falcon overnight Feb. 17.
The fire, which started on Wednesday at 10:00 pm, was reported under control as of 5:15 am Thursday, as several fireboats fought the blaze.
Fire officials were concerned by the 48,000 gallons of diesel fuel aboard the vessel, as well as 10,000 pounds of ammonia reported nearby the vessel.
The US Coast Guard is monitoring the situation for potential pollution and extended a safety zone overnight.
The Aleutian Falcon is used to process herring and salmon in Alaska. The 233-foot vessels accommodates a crew of 120.
Seattle-based Trident has been moving closer to resuming operations following a recent COVID-19 outbreak in its Akutan, Alaska, processing facility, with the latest testing results last Friday showing no new positive cases at the facility.
Though a date has not been set for the reopening, the a date is "expected to be announced soon with continued due diligence," Trident Seafoods Vice President of Government Relations Stefanie Moreland said.
