Russia’s federal fishery agency, Rosrybolovstvo, is planning to build a number of land-based feed and smolt facilities, in a bid to end its heavy reliance on imports.

The hope is to build enough facilities to produce an overall annual capacity of 330,000 metric tons of feed and up to 40 million pieces of salmon fry.

At present, a new smolt facility is under construction in Karelia, and another one is planned to be built in the Murmansk region.
