A group representing Denmark's fish farmers are pushing back on Denmark Environment Minister Lea Wermelin's proposed bills seeking to end the expansion of traditional netpen farming, saying they show a lack of understanding of the sector and its efforts to produce sustainably.

The bills, presented to the parliament last week, propose a regulatory overhaul that would centralize and increase oversight of the sector, and effectively bring the industry's growth to a halt, critics of the legislation say.

Wermerlin, a social democrat, said in introducing the bills that "it is time for us to clean up and ensure effective supervision of aquaculture," said Wermelin.
